  17. [G] I was thumbin' a ride one Saturday mornin'
  18. Out of [C] Nashville totin' my sack
  19. I lent my [D7] car to a gal that lived in Chattanooga
  20. And she hadn't ever brought it back. [G]
  21.  
  22. She was drinkin' pretty heavy, when I let her have it
  23. Hope she knows it was only a loan
  24. Ain't no tellin' what I might have told her back at the time,
  25. But that old car was also my home.
  26.  
  27. About five miles out I was gettin' kinda tired
  28. Sweatin' hard and feelin' kinda weak
  29. I woke up with no cigarettes or nothin' to drink
  30. And I hadn't had a bite to eat.

  32. My nerves was so quick I couldn't tell where I was shakin'
  33. Then a set of brakes sang my song
  34. Some fellow stuck his head out a '51 Chevy
  35. And hollered "Hey man, come on."
  36.  
  37. I tole 'em I was headin' down to Chattanooga
  38. They said hop in, we're goin' there too
  39. And the way they took off in a cloud of smoke
  40. I still ain't believin' it was true.

  42. They had their windows down, and I was sittin' in the back
  43. With my tongue still hung in my throat
  44. He was hittin' just about a hundred and ten 
  45. And he said, "Man, what you think of this boat?"
  46.  
  47. Well, there was two semi's a-strugglin' up ahead
  48. One tryin' to pass the other
  49. They had the whole road blocked so he passed 'em on  the right
  50. And let me tell you somethin' brother.

  52. I was so nervous my that teeth was clickin' 
  53. There wasn't no way my head could think
  54. Then the one that was sittin' on the passenger side 
  55. Turned and said, "Hey man, you want somethin' to  drink?"
  56.  
  57. I just shook my head 'cause I couldn't talk
  58. He said OK and then he said cheers
  59. Them fools was drinkin' whiskey and wine
  60. And chasin' it down with beer.
  61.  
  62. Well, I started sweatin' that old sticky sweat
  63. And I know I was white as a sheet
  64. Then one turned the radio on wide open
  65. And said, "Hey man, check that beat."
  66.  
  67. By the time we reached the top of Monteagle
  68. I thought I heard a rumblin' sound
  69. And then I saw a sign that said 'FALLIN' ROCK'
  70. And right there I was floorboard bound.

  72. I was rollin' and squirmin' on the old floorboard
  73. Too weak to sit or stand
  74. And then the driver said "We're doin' a hundred and twenty
  75. Look here man, no hands!"
  76.  
  77. I got up enough nerve to raise up and look
  78. By now there couldn't be no surprise,
  79. But his hair was blowin' all over my face
  80. And dandruff blowed in both eyes.

  82. He never did drive on the right or left
  83. He just kept on ridin' that line
  84. I rubbed my eyes and saw the prettiest thing
  85. The Chattanooga City Limit Sign.

  87. He slowed down and I said, "Mister please!
  88. I'd like to get off right here"
  89. He said, "Aw, ride on into town with us
  90. We'e gonna go down n' pick up some more beer."
  91.  
  92. I said please once more and he stopped the car
  93. And then he handed me my sack
  94. Said they'd look for me on the road later on
  95. (In) Case I wanted to catch a ride back.

  97. I got out and sat down by the side of the road
  98. Feelin' sick and lookin' mighty pale
  99. I don't remember anything much after that
  100. But next mornin', I woke up in jail.

  102. I didn't know anybody in my cell,
  103. And didn't wanta ask why I was there
  104. But they all kept grinnin' and turnin' their heads
  105. And it was more than my head could bear.

  107. [G] So I called the jailer and asked him to tell me
  108. Why I was [C] there, if he'd be so kind
  109. He said, [S] [D] [P]
  110. "For stoppin' traffic, while I was huggin' and kissin'
  111. The Chattanooga City Limit Sign." [G]
